What is the difference between a bin and a barrel?

The short answer is that a bin is composting continuously, and materials are added as need arises whereas a barrel or drum is often considered a batch method of making compost where large quantities of organic materials are available to make a "batch". the tumblers,barrels,drums have some method of turning the container to mix the materials and help to create decomposition of the materials quicker.

Do they stink indoors?

Not if the directions are followed.

How large a composter should i choose?

Answer this by asking yourself how and where the composter will be used. the largest trash bags hold about 30 gal of waste figuring very roughly,  because these measures are used for different purposes, around 4cu ft.
